Daniel, your plan looks awesome! I love how detailed you are going as far as already having your survey questions created. Our topics our very close to being the same so I am curious to see how our results are the same and differ. Do you plan on comparing these students with non-involved students or just among the extra-curricular students?
ReplyDeleteIn my plan you see "Regular Education" students listed as a group. That is what I'm referring to as students non-involved in extracurriculars.
DeleteGreat job! Your plan is very detailed and thorough! I'm a theatre teacher and I'll be interested in the results of your ARP!
ReplyDeleteGood Plan Daniel. Very detail.
ReplyDeleteDaniel, your plan is impressive! I like the way you're incorporating various technology. Can't wait to hear of your findings! Also, sending you good luck for your presentation to Board of Trustees for your school district!
ReplyDeleteThanks, my community is very pro-kids (love sports, band, choir, FFA, drama, etc)and I believe that they will rally behind the results. I haven't run this study yet, but I am VERY sure of the outcome (those involved in extracurriculars have the best grades and therefore are not benefiting from a district policy to limit days out of class, etc) that we will see.
DeleteWow! I like that your plan is extremely detailed. I'm wondering how you are going to make the connection between the multiple data sources: GPA, SBA results, days missed from school and extracurricular activities. I am very interesting in hearing about these connections. It seems like you have put a lot of time, thought, and effort into your plan. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteMy premise is that most kids get out of bed for things like football, choir, one-act play, FFA, etc, and not for algebra, chemistry, IPC, etc. Also, the kids who find satisfaction, joy, and support in the extracurriculars will do what it takes to stay eligible and passing (more than passing actually, as most want to succeed at the next level) vs. those that are not involved. It will be detailed to be sure, my OCD is really more like CDO...I have that crap in alphabetical order...and we will turn over all of the stones.
DeleteWOW! Great Job! Having such a detailed plan will make it very easy throughout the year. It looks like you have covered all of your bases and I am excited to see the results of your ARP.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cassie! I hope my bases are covered. I'm meeting with my principal again next soon to review my updated ideas and I hope she feels in-sync with me. This is a hot topic around here so I think it should flow well.
DeleteGreat job Daniel! Your plan is a clear, detailed, and thorough account of your project. And all those people on your research team AND you are presenting to the Board of Trustees...you are the guy to know!
ReplyDeleteI hope so! I've gotten confirms from a few of the team members so that could be done this week.
DeleteIncredible job Daniel...one of the most thorough plans I have seen. I love your technology incorporation and survey questions!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sarah. If it wasn't for technology I would drown under the sea of paperwork.
DeleteI think by far this is the most detailed plan that I have seen. I don't think the your IA will have seen something this well written before when they see it. Good luck with your ARP.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great plan. I was wondering if you are also comparing those involved in extra-curricular activities with those who are not involved in the activities. In essence, using the uninvolved as your control group. It would be interesting to see the correlations based upon WHICH extra activities and the number of activities. Can't wait to see your results.
ReplyDeleteYour plan is very detailed. Maybe list your second group as non-extracurricular students to help clarify the difference. I would like to see your survey sheet once complete and I will share mine. Now that I have finished all my summer vacations I will have time to work on my research plan. If you get a chance to look at mine please let me know if I have not covered something in my plan.
ReplyDeleteWOW! WOW! WOW! Your plan is the most well-written, thorough and detailed plan of all that I have read. After reading yours, I see some things that I need to go back and add to mine. Yours is amazing! One question, your "regular education students", does that just mean your students that aren't involved in any extra curricular activities? To me "regular education" usually means students that are not special education students. You might want to add a little detail to explain that. But, great job on your plan!!
ReplyDeleteDaniel,
ReplyDeleteThis looks great!!! (As per usual for you.) I also see some ways I can change or add to mine because of the look of your plan. Thanks for a great model. How are you picking the students within these extracurricular programs or are you following all of the students within these programs?
This action research plan is absolutely amazing! Now, I'm going to go redo mine! :) I only taught in a high school for a couple of years, but this was definitely something I thought about. I will definitely want to see your results. My youngest son only has one more year before he can start middle school football, but I have been preparing him now. I have my own no pass/no play rule! It works for him!
ReplyDeleteDaniel,
ReplyDeleteGreat detail in your plan! I really enjoyed looking over your plan and comparing it to mine. I am planning on doing a similar research and felt like we had a lot of the same great ideas. I cannot wait to see some of our results and not only see how they compare to what we thought it would be but also compare it to other schools.
Awesome!! Incredibly detailed and you should have tons of data. Who is on the research team? Did I miss that? It may not even matter.
ReplyDeleteKim, it's in the 2nd row (me, principal, counselor, math/science teacher, English teacher, choir/band teacher, FFA/vo.ag. teacher, FCCLA/Family Cons. Science teacher, Computer teacher/athletic coach)
DeleteDaniel, I have no suggestions for your plan because it looks outstanding!
ReplyDeleteI think you are the most follow colleague! Great job!
Daniel,
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I would offer is you may wish to google "informed consent" forms for parents (minors cannot give informed consent, obvious reasons) with this plan attached so that the parents understand the scope of the research and the goal of the research. How exactly will you identify the representative 10% of each group?
I've thought of that, Jay. When I taught in New Mexico I had to complete a dossier for the PED, basically a master's thesis paper on how and what I taught, which required release forms. As for the 10%, I will work with the counselor for rosters of students and I will get lists of all extracurricular teams. Next my team and I will meet to create a complete list of those in and not in activities. Once we have those two lists complete we will put them in a spreadsheet and insert a randomizer macro to select the 10%.
